To commemorate the 70th anniversary of Big Ray’s outfitting Alaskans for all conditions Plaid was commissioned to create a unique way to display the history of the company. In addition to showcasing historic milestones of Big Ray’s the timeline features major events that happened in Alaska those same 70 years. To do this we proposed using a weathered wood structure as a nod to the territorial days of Alaska, as well as to the surplus sales that the company was founded upon. Vintage images were printed onto ash panels and then assembled in each Big Ray’s store – either as a flat wall display or as a column as space permitted. Mounted to the wood are historic images with offset captions on clear acrylic. The end result was a mixture of old and new that told the story well. If you are in Anchorage, Fairbanks or Kodiak, swing by and take a look at the end result.
